Abstract

A rare peristediid fish Heminodus philippinus Smith, 1917 presented here as first findings from the Andaman waters, based on a single specimen collected from off the Andaman coast of India at a depth ranging from 300 to 325 m. Previous record of H. philippinus only came from south Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. The present specimen is the first representative from Indian EEZ, comprising Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman waters having a total area of 2.02 million sq. km. Along with the morphometric and meristic values, a short description of the species is also provided.
